Chieftan’s Walk

In 2018, on the first anniversary of his passing, Martin’s family launched the Chieftain’s Walk. Thousands of people participated in the Walk from Creggan Country Park to An Grianán Fort, a place Martin loved to visit.

In 2019, the Chieftain’s Walk took place from Ebrington Square, a former military barracks, across the Peace Bridge to the Brandywell. The route encompassed two sites that Martin’s leadership helped develop.

In 2020, the planned route, along the Derry Walls, had to be restricted because of the Covid pandemic. Martin’s wife Bernie and their children Grainne, Fionnuala, Fiachra and Emmett completed the Walk on behalf of all of those who had signed up to take part.

Over the three years that the Walk has happened it has raised £80,000 and supported the ICU at Altnagelvin hospital, Foyle Hospice and the work of the Foundation.

It is planned that the Walk will take place again this year, but final arrangements are being held-back due to the Covid pandemic health restrictions. We will update this information as soon as we are able to.
